  1. The Chinese Lady

Oct. 10, 2024

Best enjoyed by audiences 12 and up.

Inspired by the true story of Afong Moy, The Chinese Lady is a darkly poetic yet whimsical portrait of our collective past through the eyes of a young Chinese woman. Afong Moy is only 14 years old when she’s brought to the United States in 1834 and placed on public display as “The Chinese Lady” — thought to be the first to step foot on U.S. soil. Decade after decade, she performs as a living exhibit, showing curious white people how she eats, what she wears and — the highlight of the event — how she walks with bound feet. Time wears on, and eventually the lines between her performance and her own identity become blurry. Described as "moving and often sharply funny" (The New York Times),  The Chinese Lady serves as an examination of the ongoing struggle for empathy and understanding across cultural divides.

And in This Corner: Cassius Clay

Nov. 19, 2024
Drama
60 - 80 minutes

Set: Fluid--several literal or suggested locations

At the sound of the bell, young Cassius Clay Jr. takes his first step into the ring and starts becoming the man the world would know as Muhammad Ali. This swift, vibrant historical drama bobs and weaves through the iconic boxer's early life in Jim Crow-era Louisville. An unlikely hero is a classic story, but And in This Corner goes an extra, exhilarating round by exploring how remarkable communities help to create them.

Josh’s life is a mess. He’s come home to Denver from NYU to get his life together but can’t manage to stay sober. Desperate for camaraderie, he decides to bring his four loveable grandparents on his road to recovery. He drags them to Jazzercise class at the JCC. He pressures them into playing memory games. He forces them to eat spinach by the handful. And eventually, when he can no longer help his grandparents, they begin to help him. Served up with outrageous humor and truth, The Reservoir reminds us that sometimes the path forward isn’t the one we expect.
